What Is a Substation? Types, Components and Delivery in Azerbaijan

A substation is one of the most important nodes in any electrical network. It transforms voltage levels, controls the flow of power and protects the grid — allowing electricity generated at power plants (including solar and wind farms) to be transmitted efficiently and delivered safely to homes, businesses and industry.

What does a substation do?

At its core, a substation steps voltage up or down and provides switching, protection and control. Step-up substations raise generator voltage for long-distance transmission; step-down substations reduce it for distribution and end use.

Main components

Types of substation

Conventional (fixed) substations

Built on site for permanent operation in transmission and distribution networks.

Mobile substations

Trailer-mounted, pre-commissioned units that provide rapid, plug-and-play power for emergencies, planned maintenance or temporary needs — up to 400 kV.

E-House (prefabricated) substations

Containerised electrical rooms assembled and tested in a factory, then shipped to site for fast commissioning across power, oil & gas, renewables and industry.

Delivering substations in Azerbaijan

PROTECH designs, builds, tests and energises substations and power-distribution systems in Azerbaijan, including mobile and E-House solutions. Our references include a 4 MW substation building, a 330 kV transmission line and 400 kV underground cabling.
